I wrote “Everything Speaks His Name” as an assignment song when I was in college. It was an assignment where we were supposed to “Start with a title.” I came up with “Everything Speaks His Name” as a title, and I was feeling pretty smug about it. I thought it would be a love
song, but as I began writing, I realized — it had to be about God. And so I wrote about all the things I could think of that ‘denote there is a God.’ A dewdrop…a soaring eagle…a newborn baby…This song could have had a thousand verses.
But I only wrote three of them, and though it is impossible to describe the unfathomable majesty of all His creations, I described a few of the ones that I especially love. And so, in the end, it IS a love song. It’s about the love I have for all the beauty around me, but mostly it’s about the love of God for us. I continue to learn, on a daily basis, how much He is willing to give us, and how anxious to guide us. For like Paul, ‘I am persuaded that neither life nor death…nor angels, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God.’ (Romans 8:38,39)
